In collaboration with the crypto platform Sweet, Major League Soccer (MLS) has introduced an innovative NFT collectible experience called “MLS Quest” on the Sui blockchain. This new venture brings a unique interactive challenge for soccer fans across North America, blending digital rewards with real-life soccer events.

The MLS Quest platform allows fans to collect digital Key Play of the Game Medallions, which are scattered at both online and physical locations throughout the region, including MLS match venues. Each medallion unlocks exciting moments from past and present MLS games, offering fans a chance to relive iconic plays.

By collecting all four medallions tied to a particular match, fans complete a “quest” and can earn special rewards, ranging from team merchandise and signed jerseys to match tickets and exclusive behind-the-scenes experiences.

“At Major League Soccer, we are constantly exploring ways to engage with our fans and enhance their experience,” said Chris Schlosser, SVP of Emerging Ventures at MLS. “Our partnership with Sweet on MLS Quest introduces an interactive collectible experience that reflects our dedication to digital innovation in the sports world.”

MLS Quest is kicking off with a free collectible that fans can claim through the official platform website, with additional collectibles available in the marketplace starting at $4.

NFT collectibles have been hyping up across major sports leagues since the success of Dapper Labs‘ NBA Top Shot on the Flow blockchain. Dapper Labs has since launched similar platforms with the NFL and UFC, while other leagues like MLB and NHL are exploring digital collectibles, showcasing a growing trend in the intersection of sports and blockchain technology.

Why SUI?

The Sui blockchain is a strategic choice for NFT collectibles like MLS Quest due to several of its core features that enhance the experience for users. First, Sui’s architecture is designed for high scalability and low latency, enabling it to handle high transaction volumes quickly. This means that fans can claim or trade NFTs almost instantly, without frustrating delays, which is critical for maintaining engagement in interactive experiences like sports collectibles.

Additionally, Sui uses a unique object-centric data model, leveraging the Move programming language to treat each NFT as a unique, modifiable asset. This allows for more complex, interactive NFTs that can change based on user actions, such as completing specific quests or gathering a set of items, enhancing the gamified experience for fans.

Sui’s efficient infrastructure also keeps transaction costs low, making it affordable for fans to participate fully. Low fees are essential for a platform aimed at a broad audience, where high costs could deter engagement. The developer ecosystem on Sui is another strength, as it is backed by Mysten Labs, a team with experience from Meta’s Diem project, attracting a community focused on secure and innovative solutions. This enhances Sui’s appeal for developers and projects looking to push the boundaries of digital collectibles.

Finally, Sui’s proof-of-stake consensus model makes it environmentally friendly, addressing sustainability concerns associated with blockchain. For MLS, this helps align with responsible practices while embracing digital innovation, making Sui an ideal platform for delivering an engaging, fan-centered experience.
