President Donald Trump praised the Official Trump (TRUMP) meme coin on Sunday. By doing this he triggered a rapid and substantial surge in TRUMP market value. Trump’s direct financial ties to the cryptocurrency immediately revived ethical and legal concerns regarding conflicts of interest.
At exactly 10:33 AM ET, President Trump declared on TruthSocial: “I LOVE $TRUMP—SO COOL!!! The Greatest of them all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”. Within moments of his proclamation, the cryptocurrency, built on the Solana blockchain, surged dramatically. It reached as high as $12.25 before quickly encountering volatility.
Market Reaction on TRUMP surge
As of March 24, 2025, the TRUMP token has settled at approximately $11.93. It marked an impressive 9.48% increase within the last 24 hours following the TRUMP surge. Despite this recent boost, the token remains significantly below its historical high of $73.43 recorded during its peak in January, representing an 84% decrease from its all-time peak.
Cryptocurrency analysts remain skeptical about the token’s long-term prospects despite its temporary surges. Luis Buenaventura, head of crypto at GCash, notes, “The market is no longer excited about the Trump token. Investors are primarily attracted by short-term profit opportunities, rather than seeing it as a sustainable investment.”
Ethical and Legal Challenges Loom Large
Trump’s direct promotion of a financial asset closely connected to his family’s business holdings has intensified scrutiny among ethical watchdogs, legal experts, and constitutional scholars. Trump’s affiliated entities, CIC Digital LLC and Fight Fight Fight LLC, retain control of roughly 80% of the token’s total supply, raising significant conflict-of-interest concerns. This TRUMP surge in the family’s crypto holdings has not gone unnoticed.

Digital media attorney Andrew Rossow emphasized the gravity of the situation: “This sets a dangerous precedent of leveraging high public office for substantial private financial gain.”
Constitutional and Regulatory Concerns
Rossow highlighted three principal constitutional issues stemming from Trump’s cryptocurrency endorsement:
- Emoluments Clauses (Article 1, Section 9). These clauses explicitly prohibit sitting presidents from accepting financial gains from domestic or foreign entities without explicit Congressional approval. Cryptocurrency’s global and often anonymous trading nature significantly complicates enforcement, raising concerns of indirect foreign influence.
- Separation of Powers (Article II, Section 3). Trump’s endorsement undermines the regulatory roles of institutions like the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), potentially compromising regulatory impartiality and integrity.
- Equal Protection and Due Process (Fifth Amendment). The presidential promotion of a single cryptocurrency could unfairly influence market dynamics, disadvantaging other digital assets and raising questions of competitive fairness.
Was TRUMP Surge Lucrative For The President?
The TRUMP token’s financial success underscores the scale and scope of Trump’s involvement in crypto-related ventures. Reports indicate that a recent TRUMP surge led the project’s associated digital wallets to amass approximately $350 million from token sales within three weeks following the initial January launch, drawing increased attention to ethical considerations.

Earlier this month, another Trump-affiliated decentralized finance venture, World Liberty Financial, garnered roughly $390 million in a recent round of token sales, highlighting the president’s extensive and profitable engagement with digital assets.
The Debate: Innovation vs. Ethical Concerns
Supporters argue Trump’s cryptocurrency promotion is consistent with his broader strategic objective of bolstering the U.S. as a leader in blockchain technology and cryptocurrency innovation. They see such endorsements as catalysts for investment, innovation, and economic growth in the digital space.
However, critics warn that intertwining private financial interests with presidential influence undermines the ethical foundations of governance and erodes public trust.
Awaiting Regulatory Clarity
Trump’s representatives have thus far declined to publicly address ethical and regulatory questions surrounding his crypto endorsements. The silence has fueled ongoing uncertainty and debate while contributing to the TRUMP surge.
As investors and regulators navigate this complex and unprecedented intersection of politics and cryptocurrency, careful scrutiny and continued vigilance are likely to dominate discussions in the foreseeable future.
