From Iris Scans to Social Proof: Lido Co-founders Set to Challenge World Network

Sam Altman, co-founder of OpenAI, introduced Worldcoin in 2022, a blockchain project that gained attention for its unique approach: verifying users’ identities through iris scans with a futuristic metal orb. Recently rebranded as “World Network,” the platform offers digital identity verification designed to distinguish humans from bots in an increasingly AI-driven internet landscape.

Now, a team of, well, basically the most well-known blockchain developers in the business, including the co-founders of the decentralized finance platform Lido, is reportedly preparing to launch a direct competitor. The new project, codenamed “Y,” aims to disrupt the identity verification space by addressing many of the criticisms levelled at World Network.

A Different Approach to Digital Identity

Instead of relying on biometric data, Y will use social and blockchain activity to verify users’ humanity. According to internal planning documents, Y plans to sidestep privacy controversies by aggregating data from users’ online presence, combined with tools like the Ethereum Attestation Service, to confirm identity. This decentralized approach minimizes privacy risks and mitigates concerns about data exploitation, offering an alternative to World Network’s iris scans.

By moving away from hardware-intensive systems like World Network’s Orb, Y is also poised to overcome logistical challenges tied to centralized equipment. This could enhance accessibility and ease adoption, particularly in regions where biometric systems have faced regulatory pushback or bans.

The Vision for Y

The long-term goal for Y extends beyond simple identity verification. The project envisions a “Crypto SuperApp” that enables users to create, manage, and monetize their digital identities privately. By doing so, Y aims to provide an ecosystem that not only verifies users but also allows them to capitalize on their online presence and interactions.

This vision aligns with the broader trend of identity-centric blockchain tools but distinguishes itself by focusing on privacy and user empowerment. Y’s developers aim to attract users who are wary of biometric data risks and seek a more nuanced approach to identity verification.

Strategic Competition

Y’s marketing strategy reportedly highlights the controversies surrounding World Network. These include privacy concerns, accusations of exploitative recruitment practices, and fears of centralized control due to World Network’s ties to OpenAI.

The planning documents outline how Y intends to leverage these issues to differentiate its platform. For instance, while World Network has faced criticism over black markets for iris scans and concerns about data leaks, Y’s reliance on decentralized verification methods promises to alleviate such risks.

Challenges Ahead

Despite its ambitious plans, Y will need to compete with World Network’s significant head start. Since its launch, World Network has reportedly onboarded over 15 million users, with millions opting for its iris-scan-based identity verification. Y’s success will likely hinge on its ability to gain trust within the privacy-conscious blockchain community and attract users disillusioned by World Network’s approach.

Connections to Lido and Beyond

As the largest decentralized finance platform on Ethereum, Lido’s clout could play a pivotal role in promoting Y. The co-founders of Lido, who are also affiliated with Cyber Fund, bring significant industry influence to the table. Cyber Fund’s portfolio includes other notable projects, such as the validator firm P2P.org and the Ethereum layer-2 network Nil, which could serve as strategic allies for Y’s launch. Cyber Fund has invested in over 150 projects, whilst the fund’s mission is to accelerate the transition to an open cybernetic economy by supporting entrepreneurs innovating at the intersection of blockchain, artificial intelligence, robotics, and related technologies. The team comprises experts in finance, operations, strategy, and research, all committed to assisting companies from inception through growth stages.

Y’s developers are likely to emphasize the differences in philosophy between their project and World Network. While World Network is associated with centralized entities like OpenAI, Y aims to champion decentralization and user autonomy.

Final Thoughts

Y’s emergence highlights the growing competition in blockchain-based identity systems, particularly as AI tools continue to blur the lines between human and machine interactions. By addressing privacy concerns and focusing on decentralized verification, Y has the potential to carve out its niche in this evolving space. However, its success will depend on its ability to gain user trust and establish a compelling alternative to established players like World Network.
