Lugano recently hosted its annual blockchain summit, where a new bronze statue honoring Satoshi Nakamoto was officially revealed. The unveiling was organized by the Plan ₿ Initiative in partnership with the city of Lugano and Tether, drawing prominent figures from the blockchain sector as well as government dignitaries.
Artist Valentina Picozzi designed the statue to capture the mysterious essence and lasting influence of Nakamoto, the enigmatic creator of Bitcoin. A unique feature of the sculpture is its ability to appear as though it fades when viewed from different angles, symbolizing Nakamoto’s retreat from the public eye following the launch of Bitcoin in 2009 and his subsequent disappearance in 2010.
Mayor Michele Foletti highlighted Lugano’s rising status as a hub for digital innovation during the ceremony. He emphasized the statue’s role in reinforcing the city’s commitment to developing a blockchain-driven economy.
“Lugano is swiftly becoming a leading center for digital innovation. This statue not only pays tribute to Satoshi Nakamoto but also represents the innovative spirit that fuels our city,” Foletti commented. “We are delighted to host the Plan ₿ Forum and support the advancement of blockchain technologies and digital assets. It is a privilege to introduce this monument celebrating the visionary behind Bitcoin.”

The 2024 Plan ₿ Forum concentrated on the latest developments in Bitcoin and blockchain technologies, with a particular focus on how decentralized finance (DeFi) can revolutionize traditional financial systems. Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, regarded the statue as a homage to Nakamoto’s significant contributions to decentralized finance, underscoring the continuous drive for financial independence and innovation within the blockchain community.
This event underscores Lugano’s dedication to fostering a thriving environment for blockchain advancements and acknowledges the pivotal role Satoshi Nakamoto has played in shaping the future of digital finance.
Are There Any Other Satoshi Statues?
Satoshi Nakamoto has another prominent statue besides the recent one unveiled in Lugano. The world’s first statue dedicated to Nakamoto was unveiled in 2021 in Budapest, Hungary. Located in Graphisoft Park, this bronze sculpture was designed by artists Reka Gergely and Tamas Gilly and portrays a hooded, faceless figure with a reflective surface. This design allows viewers to see their own reflection in the face, symbolizing the decentralized and anonymous nature of Bitcoin. The project was led by Andras Gyorfi, a Hungarian Bitcoin advocate, who intended the statue to honor Nakamoto’s contributions to cryptocurrency and decentralized technology.

This Budapest statue became a popular landmark for the crypto community, embodying the philosophy of “We are all Satoshi” to represent collective ownership and the community-driven spirit of blockchain technology.
