Renowned for the iconic Final Fantasy series, Square Enix is embarking on an ambitious journey with artificial intelligence (AI) in the coming year, as revealed in a recent statement by the company’s President, Takashi Kiryu.
In his yearly address, Kiryu expressed his conviction that generative AI holds the key to revolutionizing both the creation and the development processes in gaming, including programming aspects.
Role of AI in Web3 gaming
Since assuming presidency in June 2023, Kiryu has been an advocate for digitization in response to the gaming community’s shift from physical media. He envisions AI playing a pivotal role in enhancing the efficiency of game development and bolstering the company’s marketing strategies in the near future.
Beyond its immediate applications, Kiryu envisions AI as a tool for crafting novel content types, indicating a long-term commitment to this technology.
Despite the focus on AI, Kiryu clarified that Square Enix hasn’t completely moved on from its blockchain and “Web3” ventures, topics that were frequently addressed by his predecessor, Yosuke Matsuda.
The year 2023 saw the company prioritizing blockchain, cloud gaming, and AI, with anticipated structural changes to facilitate ongoing research and development in these domains. The specifics of these changes, including potential staff reallocations or layoffs, remain undisclosed.
Generative AI, however, remains a contentious subject within the gaming sector. While smaller blockchain gaming groups like Parallel and the Unioverse, alongside industry leaders like Microsoft, have acknowledged its potential to enhance game development, Microsoft’s announcement of a generative AI tool for Xbox sparked concerns among professionals about job security.
Square Enix and NFTs
The absence of blockchain discussions in Square Enix’s latest communication suggests a stronger emphasis on AI as the primary technology focus for 2024.
In addition to their traditional gaming ventures, Square Enix has been actively exploring the NFT (Non-Fungible Token) space, positioning itself at the forefront of this emerging technology in gaming. One of their most significant forays into NFTs is with the game ‘Symbiogenesis’, released in December. This game is unique in that it incorporates NFTs as an optional element within its gameplay. ‘Symbiogenesis’ is set in a 2D world and offers players a narrative-driven experience with quests and challenges.
The game’s NFT aspect involves character avatars that players can own as Ethereum-based NFTs. These avatars, with distinctive and sometimes quirky names like “Condiment” and “Wastebasket”, have become collectible items, trading for substantial sums in the digital marketplace. The total trading volume for these NFTs has reached around 87 ETH, equivalent to about $204,000.
This venture into NFT gaming represents a significant step for Square Enix, showing their willingness to integrate blockchain technology into their gaming portfolio and exploring new models of player engagement and digital ownership.
What are the other Square Enix Games?
To complement the article’s focus on Square Enix’s AI strategy, it’s worth noting the company’s rich history in game development. Square Enix is renowned for creating some of the most memorable and influential games in the industry. Apart from the legendary Final Fantasy series, which has been a cornerstone of their success, they are also known for other celebrated franchises like Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts, and the Tomb Raider series (under the Square Enix Europe banner).
These games have not only achieved critical acclaim but have also amassed a large, dedicated fanbase worldwide. Their expertise in developing immersive worlds, compelling narratives, and engaging gameplay has established Square Enix as a leading force in the gaming industry. This background in creating beloved titles adds context to their decision to integrate AI into future projects, illustrating their commitment to innovation while building on a strong legacy of game development.
