The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States space agency has created the NASA MarsXR Challenge in collaboration with Epic Games and Buendea in search for a perfect Martian metaverse.
According to the findings of Herox’s research, the NASA MarsXR Challenge is intended for creators and developers who are interested in using virtual reality (XR) to assist in the development of experiences that take place in the metaverse.
Buendea is a company devoted to technological advancements and innovations in real-time graphics for training, XR simulation, and education. NASA has exposed the full process of inviting developers to assist in constructing the Martian metaverse experience on the Herox website as a challenge. Herox is a platform for crowdsourcing issue solutions.
NASA metaverse Challenge and prize pool
Developers that are responsible for producing new materials and simulations for the new Mars XR Operations Support System (XOSS) environment need to make use of Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5 in order to fulfill their responsibilities.
The whole of a Martian day is covered by the information collected on Mars that was first released by NASA and made available to the public.
As for the metaverse, it must represent a planet in another galaxy that is 400 km2 wide across and has a topography that is both realistic and detailed. The color of the environment shifts from orange to blue depending on whether it is day or night.
During the Martian Metaverse Creation Challenge, there will be a total of $70,000 distributed in the form of cash and prizes. The task is split into a total of twenty individual distinctions.
Each of the five categories that have been outlined has a total of four rewards up for grabs, and every one of them gives designers an opportunity to come up with one-of-a-kind situations. The grand prize for this category is $6,000, which will be awarded to the winner of the competition.

The submission of the application must be completed and received by the specified time on July 26 in order to meet the requirements outlined in the competition’s schedule. After a review process that goes on for one and a half months, on September 27, 2022, the winner will be called out and their name will be announced.
This challenge already has 25 teams and 266 people signed up to take part in it as of right this moment. The groundbreaking piece of code known as Unreal Technology 5 (UT5), which was created by Epic Games, is primarily responsible for the company’s well-established reputation. It was used in critically acclaimed video games such as the Kingdom Hearts IV and the top-selling video game Fortnite. The reviews for both of these games have been really positive.
Over the course of the last several years, a considerable portion of available funds has been invested in the development of Unreal Engine 5 (UE5). It has received investments totaling two billion dollars from both Sony, which has contributed one billion dollars, and Kiribi, the parent company of LEGO, which contributed an additional billion dollars.
Unlike all other projects that concentrate on meaningless virtual worlds, as well as gambling in the metaverse, NASA’s initiative shows the real benefits that this tech brings. Meanwhile, Elon Musk has revealed that there will be a Mars Coin.
